The coins consist of a single item and two fused groups, of six and four coins respectively.
The coins all appear to be silver and five of them can be examined in reasonable detail: the loose coin and the four end coins of the two fused groups. All these belong to the English Short Cross coinage (1180-1247) and it is reasonable to assume that the whole group consists of coins of this type. Given this, they would therefore consist of over 90% fine silver. Their details are as follows.
Separate coin
Class 7a3 (c. 1220-1222) Terri, London TERRIONLVND 1.41g
Fused group 1 (6 coins) 8.26g (mean wt of each coin: 1.38g)
Class 3-4 (c. 1190-1204) Ricard, London RICARD.ON.LVN
Class 7b3 (c.1232-c.1234)
Fused group 2 (4 coins) 4.7g (mean wt of each coin: 1.18g)
Class 7b1 (1222-c.1229)
Before class 7 (1180-1217/18) [ ].ON.CANT (fragment)
Notes:
It is therefore clear that the coins represent a sum deposited on one occasion, fairly late in the Short Cross currency period, probably in the years c. 1232-47. It is my opinion, therefore, that this find constitutes Treasure according to the terms of the Act.
