Report: The small rectangular raised bezel from a Roman silver 'Brancaster type' finger-ring. A grey-coloured accretion on the back face is probably decayed solder, the original fastening medium. The front face has three short lines of deeply-incised un-punctuated lettering in serifed capitals:
LEGO
N I IV
S* VIV
* the letter S is reversed.
The lettering does not readily resolve into a name or known phraseology, though the last line recalls the VIVAS ('Long life to you') or VIVAS IN DEO ('May you live in God') formula encountered on several of the Brancaster type rings.
Date: Roman, 4th - early 5th century AD.
Dimensions: 8.5 x 8.2 x 2.5 mm.
Weight: 1.5 g.
In age and precious metal content the object qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the 1996 Treasure Act.
