A cast lead alloy spindle whorl of Roman to later Medieval date (1100 - 1500 AD). The spindle whorl is sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in cross-section. The object has a small central circular perforation with an internal diameter of 5.73mm.
The edges of the object are decorated with eight lobed projections. The base of the object has a deep groove and two irregular pits which are probably casting flaws. The object has a light white patina and is pitted.
Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1100-1500.
