An incomplete cast copper alloy pastry jigger, of Post Medieval dating (17th to 18th Centuries AD).
Approximately 75% of the pastry jigger is present, with the wheel / cutting end missing. The object is 'T' shaped and terminates in a 'crimped' zig zag rectangular end, presumably to be used in decorating the pastry. The shaft is circular section and gradually tapers to a mid point, where a spherical knop is positioned. Above the knop, the shaft gradually tapers up to an old, pre depositional break or fracture.
The pastry jigger measures 64.09 mm in length, 35.25 mm wide and 4.81 mm thick. It weighs 8.1 g.
It is a light brown to mid green colour, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion, caused by movement whilst within the plough soil, has resulted in a loss of the majority of the original surface.
Pastry jiggers, like this example can often be confused with tile combs of Roman dating, however this fragment is more consistent with a pastry jigger of 17th to 18th Century dating.
