An incomplete Medieval pewter solid cast button, c. 14th-15th century AD. The button is discoidal and semi-circular in cross-section, with a raised casting line visible on the reverse surface as well as the remains of a crude button loop base in the centre. The outer surface of the button is decorated with a moulded raised simple spoke-wheel design radiating from the centre with annulets and pellets alternating between the spokes. The button measures 26.6 mm in diameter, 8.4 mm thick (including button loop base) and weighs 17.28 grams. Cf. Bailey 2004, p17, Fig. 6.1.
Notes:
This item was discovered in 1996 and brought in to Lewes Castle and Museum for identification. A letter retained by the finder lists the curator's response from 12th September 1996 (Identification No.: 1996/57). A similar identification was offered at that time.
