Damaged hammered silver penny of Edward II. A class 15b (North 1067) Dating from 1319 to 1321AD. The obverse has an angled E and C, very wide, well shaped side fleurs and poorly defined ornaments. The bust has a smiling face though this is not evident due to the degree of wear and is slightly smaller than a 15a. The obverse legend is EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB which is a characteristic of class 15. The reverse legend is CIVITAS LONDON. The mint is London. The coin is damaged in one corner which probably resulted from an attempt to pierce the coin. If suspended from the possible piercing, neither the obverse nor the reverse would be upright.

The diameter is 17mm and the weight is 0.95g.

Notes:

The coin has been pierced, indicating a secondary function which would normally indicate that it should be considered as potential Treasure (under Treasure Act 1996). However, coins dating after AD1180 with similar piercings are also known in hoards of currency, suggesting that such objects could re-enter circulation as coins, and not all coins were pierced to convert them into objects such as pendants. It therefore cannot be said with confidence whether this particular object was regarded as a coin or as another type of object at the time that the coin was deposited.
