FINGER RING

Unique ID: ESS-FE8E56

Object type certainty: Certain
Workflow status: Published Find published

A gold finger ring, dating to the Roman period. The hoop has a hollow construction and is complete and undistorted. The outside of the hoop is convex and undecorated. The inside of the hoop feels rough and the edges of the hoop are jagged. The hoop forms a lozenge-shaped backplate for the bezel. The bezel is circular and has been soldered onto the hoop. The bezel and its associated decoration is damaged and the setting is missing. The damage is not new. A ribbon of very small gold beading is present on the outer collar of the bezel. The beading is damaged but originally, it probably surrounded the entire collar of the bezel. Three small gold collets placed in the three corners of the lozengiform backplate ornament the bezel. It is likely that there would have been another collet in the forth corner of the backplate, but this is now missing. Two of the collets are empty, the third collet has a dark blue setting. Two of the collets have two gold pellets located on either side. Only one gold pellet is located next to the last collet with a depression in the backplate indicating that the other pellet is missing. Overall, the condition of the finger ring is poor which is probably due to post deposition damage.

Maximum diameter of the hoop is 2.93mm. The minimum thickness of the hoop at the base is 1.52mm. The bezel is damaged but the height of the collar of the bezel is approximately 1.9mm. The setting is missing but the empty bezel indicates that the length of the setting would have been approximately 5.4mm. The ring weighs 4.94g.
