Fragment of a small mercury-gilded silver reliquary, of slightly flaring form, oval in section, with a flat top. A small loop is attached to the top, through which a single chain link survives. The reliquary contains small bones which, from the small amount visible, may be fragments of human distal phalanges (finger or toe bones). Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the broken metal surface of the reliquary indicated a silver content of approximately 91%, the rest being copper, gold and lead.
Notes:
The reliquary probably dates to the 18th century. As there is nothing to indicate a pre-1713 date for the reliquary, it therefore does not qualify as Treasure under the stipulations of the 1996 Treasure Act.
