Medieval cast copper alloy horse harness pendant with enamelled heraldic decoration. The pendant is in the shape of a square topped shield with a broken transverse suspension lug projecting from the centre of the top of the shield. The loop is partially missing and has an old, worn break. The shield is decorated with: gules three lions passant guardant or with a label of three points azure. A red back ground with three gold lions on it and at the top over one of the lions a blue bar with three short blue bars extending down from it. The pendant is 32.7mm long excluding the lug, 26.6mm wide and 2.8mm thick, the suspension loop is 12.1mm long, 3.6mm wide and 4.7mm thick. It weighs 8.22 grams.
Three gold lions passant guardant on a red background are the arms of England used between 1198 and 1340. The blue label is a mark of difference making them the arms of the heir to the throne. These arms were bourne by both the future Edward II (heir 1284-1307) and Edward III (heir 1312-1327). They may have decorated the horse of someone in Royal service or someone showing their loyalty to the heir.
