Notes:
This fragment of the halfpenny matches the other half recorded in 1999, No. WMID2139. David Symons comments "What you have on the preserved half is the initial cross, an upright stroke beginning the first letter of the moneyer's name and then BRVCI (looks like BRIICI on the coin). This is a Bristol mint signature and there were only 3 Bristol moneyers known for the type in 1973 (when the Bristol/Gloucester Sylloge was published). These were Aelfwine, Leofwine and Ceorl. This is a very rare coin. There was only 1 Bristol coin of Harold I published in BMC (admittedly in 1887) and only 2, of Ceorl, in the Sylloge volume. On balance I think this is likely to be a coin of Ceorl - as you have a longer mint signature that probably means a shorter moneyer's name, and the only Ceorl coin illustrated in the Sylloge had a BRVCI mint signature (from a different die however)."
