A base fragment of a late Roman ceramic vessel, a calcite-gritted jar from a Yorkshire kiln, c. 250-400.

The sherd consists of the base of a jar and a small portion of wall. The clay is a dark grey colour with a charcoal-black exterior. Large calcite inclusions can be seen in the fabric, many of which have been lost (due to the chemical reaction between the calcite and the acidic nature of the local soils), creating pitting or 'vesicles' on the interior and exterior surfaces of the sherd.
