Copper alloy Brooch. Cast Hinged Colchester Derivative Brooch, comprising tubular wings clenched around an axis bar retaining the stub of a hinged pin, gripped underneath by a triangular section flat-backed bow which tapers to an un-pierced catch-plate; a plain rectangular field on the wings extends either side of the junction of bow and wings. The front of the wings is decorated by three bands of bordered and billeted bead and reel moulding on each side, in imitation of a spring; the reverse is undecorated. The bow bears a central keeled ridge flanked by longitudinal gutters along its length, (cf Mackreth 2011 plate 54 no. 2470; CD H 1a, which matches the size and general appearance of this brooch). . Suggested date: Early Roman, 75-125 Length: 56.6mm, Width: 41.4mm, Diameter (wings): 7.2mm, Thickness (crest of bow): 6.1mm, Weight: 21.15gms.
