An unidentified lead-alloy artefact of probable Medieval or post-Medieval date.
The artefact takes the form of a squashed cylinder, open at one end, the other end closed but for a central aperture. Immediately below the open end there are two attached strap handles, one on either side, their surfaces possibly decorated with a cast pattern of transverse grooves and ridges. The surfaces of the cylinder are heavily corroded but retain traces of a possible relief moulded pattern. A moulded ring extends around the cylinder, situated a short distance up from the closed end.
Dimensions: 31.2mm long, up to 22.3mm wide. Weight: 16.51g.
Although bearing some resemblance to a two-handled toy tankard, the hole in the base would seem to preclude this identification. Another possibility is that it is part of a toy cannon; however, the strap handles would seem incongruous for such an object.
