A copper-alloy open-frame brooch of Medieval (13th to 15th century) date.
The frame is sub-hexagonal, with inward-bowing sides, and is of trapezoidal section. A continuous band of circular depressions (perhaps settings) extends around the angled inner face of the frame. The flat upper surface is decorated with a series of incised transverse grooves. At the centre of the top side, there is a pin constriction; the pin itself, however, is absent.
Dimensions: 19.5mm high, 22.9mm wide, 2.5mm thick. Weight: 2.69g.
Two similar brooches are recorded on the PAS database: SF-C2B754, from Coddenham, Suffolk; and KENT-A08266, from Bean, Kent. The suggested date for both of these examples is 13th to 15th century.
