Copper alloy rectangular military harness fitting. A robust slide with two transverse moulded V-sectioned grooves on front face. Overall dimensions of 21 x 17 x 8mm, while the socket has dimensions of 18 x 4.5mm in section.
A comparable, but larger slide comes from Catterick (Wilson 2002 no. 296) and there are other examples with convex front faces from Dura-Europos (James 2004 nos. 349-50). Others may be fragments more similar to this one (ibid. nos. 351-2). A harness stud with broadly similar decoration was found at Caistor St Edmund (HER 37008) in September 2008. Dates to the 2nd - 3rd century.
