Possible Toy Gun. Curved cast fragment; comprising the butt and one side of the handle of a toy gun made in at least two pieces, strengthened with a mid rib and thickened at its made end. The inside is recessed, a feature which may have helped accommodate other moving parts, perhaps a trigger mechanism, with walls circa 2.3mm thick elsewhere. The display side bears a low relief pattern of cross hatched lines with a lozenge in each of its compartments, within a grooved border. The form resembles that of toy petronels or cavalry pistols reported from London, where a 17th-century date is suggested (Forsyth and Egan 2005, page 97, no. 1.39). The composite construction suspected here is more sophisticated, and an accordingly broader date range may be appropriate. Suggested date: Post-Medieval, 1650-1800.
