A copper-alloy strap loop of Medieval date.

The frame is roughly rectangular in plan, with a slight increase in width, towards the vertical outer side. This side is wider than the other three and also has a vertical ridge extending down its centre, flanked by zig-zag grooves. The other sides are of rectangular section, the shorter vertical one also pierced by a central rivet hole containing part of the copper-alloy rivet.

Dimensions: 13.9mm long, 14.7mm wide, up to 4mm thick (width of longer vertical side). Weight: 1.52g.

Strap loops of this form were found in excavations in London (Egan and Pritchard 1991: 230-232, cf. nos. 1247-1250), in layers dating from the late 13th to late 14th/early 15th centuries. It is thought that their function was to secure loose straps.
