An incomplete and corroded Early Medieval cast copper-alloy strap end of Thomas Class B type 1 (c. 9th century AD). This artefact has a wedge-shaped split end and tapers through the shaft to a zoomorphic terminal. The shaft has a more substantial rectangular section whilst the wedge-shaped split end is thin and flat in cross-section; the lower section has been lost in previous damage. At the wedge-shaped end, two rivet holes are visible, though the upper surface of the left side hole is missing. The wedge-shaped end is plain except for single lines abutting the exterior edges. From this the shaft extends and is decorated with two sets of bands formed from three incised horizontal lines just below the wedge-shaped split and above the zoomorphic terminal. The zoomorphic terminal is formed from multiple triangular cast detail. The reverse of this artefact is plain with a diagonal fracture from the loss of the lower split end, and has an overall light-green colour with areas of dark red-brown. This artefact can be broadly paralleled with Thomas (2003: 5, fig. 2, ref 13) although the rectangular section appears unusual.

Class: Thomas Class B, Type 1
