BROOCH

Unique ID: SWYOR-52D8A6

Object type certainty: Certain

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman brooch, a Headstud variant - Thealby type dating from 100 - 200 AD. The fragment consists of the head, the wings, and the tubular hinge mechanism. The upper bow has a concave surface with raised edges which continue to the top of the brooch. The wings have four vertical ridges on either side. On the reverse of the wings, the tubular hinge mechanism survives, but the axis bar and pin are missing. The reverse of the upper bow is concave at the very top and flattens out rather quickly. The surface is mid greyish-green. This brooch dates to the 2nd Century AD. See: Hattatt, p333 and compare YORYM-5FD193. NLM-D54953 is another example and the record cites the fact that "Over 80% of Thealby brooches known to Hattatt (1987, page 122, fig. 41 no. 945) are from north of the Humber, with the greatest concentration in Yorkshire and Humberside." This type of brooch is named for the 'type site' of Thealby Mine, (now) in North Lincolnshire.
