BUCKLE

Unique ID: KENT-506402

Object type certainty: Certain

A fragmnet of an enamelled cast copper alloy buckle frame of mid to late seventeenth century date. The frament appaers to be the top part of the buckle frame with the two legs of the animal, which are broken off by old breaks, would have extended to form the other sides of the frams. The fragment is in the shape of an animal with a head at one end and curled tail at the other. There are traces of a white enamal remaining.

According to Geoff Egan, the manufacurers of these buckles also produced enamelled buttons, stirrups and ornate candlesticks. This material was being made at the time of the Commonwealth and later (if not slightly earlier as well). The range was formerly known as 'Surrey enamels' from a mistaken attribution to a foundry there, but it has recently come to light that known makers in London were responsible. See C. Blair, 'Surrey' enamels reattributed' in the Journal of the Antique Metalware Society, vol. 13, 2005, (part 1) pp. 2-9; vol. 14 (part 2 with A. Patterson), pp. 10-21. Two similarly decorated, but more elaboratel, differently shaped buckles have been recorded on the database, SOM-BB0BB4 and NMS-CDABE7.

The fragment is 32.6mm long, 13.8mm wide, 2.3mm thick and weighs 3.74 grams.
