UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT

Unique ID: SWYOR-5041D2

Object type certainty: Certain

A cast copper alloy unidentified object of probable Post Medieval date, with a thick shaft, and a hooked anchor-shaped zoomorphic terminal. The zoomorphic element appears to be of two bird, serpent or animal heads with a crest or mane on the back of the neck. An openwork triangle separates the two zoomorphic ends, formed from a rectangular sections bar joining the apes of the two beasts' necks. There are incised lines on the necks representing fur or feathers. The necks of the creatures come together in the central shaft which is D shaped in section. The end looks to have been cut - it is not a break - and may be the original end or may have been shortened. The reverse of this object is flat and undecorated, suggesting that it may have been designed to lay flat against something. The object is unevenly curved, but this may be post depositional damage. The patina is dark grey with some patches missing. This is common of Post Medieval artefacts.

It is currently unclear what this object is part of or what its function was. It may be some type of hanger, hook or handle. The design of the animal heads is similar to those seen on Post-medieval 'snake' buckles of the 17th and 18th century. There are two further examples on the database: LVPL-AE83A3 and BERK-969A06 which has a much longer shaft. It has been suggested that it could be the handle from a pastry jigger such as SWYOR-624783 or SWYOR-CC2B42 which would have had a pastry jigger wheel at the other end of the handle.
