<descriptions>
<description>
<full>
An incomplete cast copper&#45;alloy medieval composite buckle frame with forked spacer. The oval frame has a central, pointed lip and curved recess on the inner face. The frame is bevelled on the upper surface, externally and internally, with the latter far steeper; the lower surface is flat. In cross&#45;section it is triangular. The frame has been narrowed at the spacer for the pin. The original pin is missing and has been replaced with a wire pin which survives. There is a slight transverse collar at the point at which the loop meets the pin. The pin has a trapezoidal cross&#45;section; the upper and lower surface are flat and the sides bevelled.
The spacer has a sub&#45;rectangular aperture next to the frame. The spacer is recessed on both upper and lower surfaces to accommodate the missing plates. The area above the plates, around the pin is raised; the frame by contrast to this latter is lowered. The buckle frame and spacer have a dark&#45;green patina.
Similar examples of this buckle type can be found in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 78&#45;82) where they are dated to the mid 14th/early 15th century.
The buckle is 39.6mm in length, 22.8mm wide, 2.75mm thick and weighs 4.1 grams.
