The rim of a contemporary British copy of Gaulish samian ware, or Terra Sigilata, known as Oxfordshire Red Coated ware. The rim is collared and the body is undecorated. Some of the glaze remains in small places on the reverse and under the rim, but the majority is gone and the orange fine sandy fabric is visible on all surfaces.
Samian ware was produced in the Gaul region of Europe and exported across Britain from the early First Century AD to the Fourth Century AD. However, it was copied by local British potters most frequently during the 4th century AD.
