A body fragment of a stoneware vessel, probably a jug, with part of a moulded relief remaining. The moulded design consists of lettering, or pseudo-lettering, bordered above and below by a beaded line. The fragment comes from a type of stoneware vessel known as a Bartmann or Bellarmine jug, usually with an applied face thought to be lampooning Cardinal Bellarmine (1542-1621), and dates from the post-medieval period (1600-1750). The outer surface is light brown which has been salt-glazed, producing the mottled effect. The interior is a dark cream colour and appears to be unglazed. The fabric is hard-fired and dark cream in colour.
