A Roman provincial copper-alloy tetradrachm of Diocletian, mint of Alexandria, Egypt. The reverse depicts Elpis standing left, holding flower, a long sash hanging from her arm, & clutching hem of robe.
Provincial Roman coins of Alexandria are occasionally found in England, and a number are recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database, such as NARC-675913. The Metheringham tetradrachm may well be a genuine Roman loss, however it is worth noting that the Lincolnshire regiment served in Egypt at the beginning of the 19th century, and again during World War II, which raises questions as to whether this coin is a modern loss of a souvenir
