STRAP FITTING
Unique ID: SUSS-7E3463
Object type certainty: Probably
A very corroded cast copper alloy strap fitting with a looped end, probably dating to the Medieval period. The fitting comprises of a single bar which is bent back on itself through a 180 degrees expanded loop. The two arms would have sandwiched the strap which was held in place by two large copper-alloy domed head rivets, the remains of which still survive. There are other examples recorded on the PAS database: cf. DOR-7E60D6; IOW-491836. The precise purpose of the fitting is unknown but it could possibly be an attachment for suspending a purse or keys. Objects of this type have been dated as early as Roman but the greater consensus places them in the Medieval period circa 1350-1500 AD. It measures 47 mm long, 17 mm wide, 7 mm thick and weighs 8.5 grams.
