<description>
<full>Cast fragment of a decorative ring, probably of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date. The ring is broken at both ends, the interior of the ring is rounded, while the exterior is V&#45;shaped. The exterior of the ring within a triangular opening is flat, possibly as a result of wear. The ring has an integral decorative moulding consisting of a central domed knop connected by two arms to the ring and terminating in smaller oval domed knops. The arms have a V&#45;shaped cross&#45;section with a flat underside forming the triangular opening. The arms curve away from the ring with a sub&#45;lozenge shaped cross&#45;section. The domed knops are decorated with a circled tricorne (a concave triangle set within a circle). The decoration is now difficult to discern in the two side knops, because of corrosion and wear. </full>

<notes>Determining which artefact type the fragment is from is now difficult. The arrangement resembles a terret, but the ring would appear to be too slight. A possible parallel may be identified in the Owslebury burial 39 (Collis 1994, in A.P. Fitzpatrick &amp; E.L. Morris ) where a belt hook of continental type was associated with a sword. The Owslebury piece is different, in that the knop is at a right angle to the ring, presumably to facilitate attachment to a strap. In this example the triangular opening (with possible wear facets) may have satisfied the function.</notes>
