MOUNT</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>An incomplete cast copper alloy bar mount, dating to the Medieval period. The mount consists of a wider broken end, a rectangular section, followed by a semi&#45;circular end with an elongated sub&#45;oval knop. Within the semi&#45;circular end, there is a circular rivet hole positioned off&#45;centre. In the area between the semi&#45;circular end and the rectangular segment, there are two raised horizontal collars; no traces of gilding or further decoration remain. The reverse surface is flat, but the mount is slightly curved, making the mount generally D&#45;shaped in cross&#45;section. The mount measures 33.42 mm long, 13.86 mm wide, 4.56 mm thick and weighs 6.43 grams.
This type of mount seems to have been commonly used on caskets: cf. Egan (1998), The Medieval Household Daily Living (c. 1150&#45;c. 1450), p 73, Nos. 145 and 147, dating to c. 1230&#45;c. 1270; Also, casket mounts from Read 2001, Nos. 165&#45;167, dating to c. 1230&#45;1260 AD.</full>
