MOUNT
Unique ID: SUSS-6C8BF5
Object type certainty: Probably
An incomplete cast copper alloy bar mount, dating to the Medieval period. The mount consists of a wider broken end, a rectangular section, followed by a semi-circular end with an elongated sub-oval knop. Within the semi-circular end, there is a circular rivet hole positioned off-centre. In the area between the semi-circular end and the rectangular segment, there are two raised horizontal collars; no traces of gilding or further decoration remain. The reverse surface is flat, but the mount is slightly curved, making the mount generally D-shaped in cross-section. The mount measures 33.42 mm long, 13.86 mm wide, 4.56 mm thick and weighs 6.43 grams.
This type of mount seems to have been commonly used on caskets: cf. Egan (1998), The Medieval Household Daily Living (c. 1150-c. 1450), p 73, Nos. 145 and 147, dating to c. 1230-c. 1270; Also, casket mounts from Read 2001, Nos. 165-167, dating to c. 1230-1260 AD.
