The central lobe has a sub-rectangular-shaped perforation on its outer face, through which tang of the sword would have originally passed. The pommel is mostly hollow. There are no rivets on the pommel, which suggests it was held in place simply by the hammered tang.<\/p>\n<p>This is a sword pommel of late Early-Medieval date and of probable Viking\/Anglo-Scandinavian origin.
