<full>A worn but complete Roman nummus, probably of Constantius II as Caesar (c. 323-336 AD). Reverse type dates to c. 324-330 AD. Mint mark: [?C]ON[S].
Obverse: laureate, draped and cuirassed bust facing left
Obverse legend: [FL] [I]VL CONSTANTIVS NOB C
Reverse: camp gate, two turrets, no doors; star above, six stone layers
Reverse legend: [PR]OVIDEN-[TIAE] (CAESS)
Discussion: The mint is uncertain; possibly Lyon, however, the remains of the mint suggest 'ON' indicating that the mint was meant to be CONST or a variation such as CONS or CONSA, which could suggest Arles, as it was renamed Constantia, or Constantinople itself. For closest examples, cf. RIC VII, p137, No. 233 for Lyon mint; for Constantinople mint cf.: RIC VII, p571, No. 10 and p572, No. 21. Similar examples have also been found for the following mints, but do not seem to match the remains of the mint mark here: Nicomedia, Rome, Cyzicus and Alexandria.</full>
