SEAL MATRIX
Unique ID: BH-3F6E71
Object type certainty: Certain
A copper-alloy seal matrix, dating from the late Medieval to early post-Medieval period.
The oval printing face has been incised with a Lombardic, highly stylised letter 'T', with a crown above and a pair of flanking palm fronds. The faceted handle tapers upwards from behind the printing face, before widening into a perforated lug. The artefact measures 25.5mm high, 15.1mm wide (height of printing face) and weighs 7.61g.
A signet ring with stylistically similar crowned letter 'T' was found in Salisbury, where it was dated to the late 15th or 16th century (Cherry in Saunders and Saunders eds. 1991: 42/fig. 12, no. 21).
