The flake, from which the scraper is made is a secondary flake with extensive cortex covering the dorsal face. The scraping edge is created with a series of semi-abrupt removals in a U-shaped arrangement although due to more recent damage this scraping edge is incomplete. The flint is semi-translucent and has a grey-brown patina.
Small scrapers, sometimes termed disc, button or thumbnail scrapers due to their form and micro-scrapers due to their size, have been dated to both the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods. Despite the small size of this scraper and extensive cortex coverage, indicating a possible Mesolithic date, it is felt that on balance with other finds, including cores of a similar patination, found at this site that the scraper is more likely to be Neolithic in date, c.3500-2100 BC and probably early Neolithic, c.3500-2900.","","","2012-01-27 13:21:20","2012-01-27 13:24:00","4","","1","2010-01-01","2011-02-01","","","","1","1","1","1","","","1","3","","cburrill2","Charlotte Burrill","DENO","cburrill2","Charlotte Burrill","Flint","","","","Knapped/flaked","","Incomplete","Good","Certain","MESOLITHIC","NEOLITHIC","","Metal detector","","Ms Charlotte Burrill","","Ms Charlotte Burrill","NOTTINGHAMSHIRE","","NEWARK AND SHERWOOD","","","","","SK8272","SK87SW","","","","","","North Clifton Area","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","367090","E7277_Beige_Thumbnail_Scraper.jpg","images/cburrill2/",
