Sometimes referred to as 'school pennies', this type of jetton shows a rechenmeister, or accountant using jettons to do accounts on a chequered board or cloth (which is where we get the phrase Exchequer). This example probably dates to the 16th century AD.
Unlike PAS record SUSS-67BFB5, which has legends indicating that the jetton was issued by Wulf Laufer (c. 1554-1601 AD), this jetton has has a fleured trellice on the obverse and a series of annulets and sets of triple pellets in lieu of literate legends. In addition, the alphabet spelled on the reverse is incorrect: 'ABCD(retrograde)E/FGHIK/LMNOP/QRSTV/:XYZZ'.","","","2012-01-26 15:41:05","2012-01-31 18:16:00","4","","1","2011-11-02","","","Date listed is date submitted for recording.","","1","1","1","1","","","","","","lwalker","Elizabeth Walker","SUSS","stephaniesmith","Stephanie Smith","Copper alloy","","","","Struck or hammered","","Complete","Fair","Certain","POST MEDIEVAL","POST MEDIEVAL","","Metal detector","","Miss Stephanie Smith",""," Liz WALKER","WEST SUSSEX","","ARUN","","","","","SU9402","SU90SW","","","","","","Near Aldingborne","From Map","Rechenmeister seated facing, at his counting table .","None","Alphabet arranged in five lines within a double square frame (D is in retrograde, J, U and W are missing and there is a dupliate Z at the end.)","none","Jetton","3","","","","","3","3","","","","","","","2","1","2","1","","","","","","","Anonymous stock","","","","Nuremberg","Very worn: fair","3 o'clock","","","","","","367292","frank kurzeja 5.jpg","images/04bowmant/",
