"484488","SUSS-16BC74","PAS4F216BC700185A","HARNESS PENDANT","","","31.41","","17.94","3.1","","1","","","MEDIEVAL","1300","1399","A complete cast copper-alloy Medieval heraldic horse harness pendant, probably 14th century AD. The pendant is shield-shaped, with an integrally-cast suspension loop at the top and a circular suspension hole running parallel to the face of the pendant. Pendants were generally suspended from leather harness straps by means of small hinged mounts, now missing in this case. The front surface of the pendant is decorated with with arms of England, the 'Gules three lions passant guardant Or'. Traces of gilding remain in each of the three lions and on a small portion of the suspension loop front. Additionally, in spite of the object being worn and treated after discovery, it seems likely that this pendant was enameled with a red background with perhaps further blue enamel. Remnants of material that suggest this type of decorative treatment have been identified under a microscope. The reverse face is undecorated and flat. The pendant measures 31.41 mm long overall, 17.94 mm wide (max), 3.10 mm thick and weighs 5.42 grams.
For a discussion on harness pendants, cf. Clark (ed) 1995, The Medieval Horse and Its Equipment, pp 61-71; also Ashley 2002, pp8-11. For a similar pendant on the PAS database, cf.: SF-4D29F7.","According to the specialist note listed on SF-4D29F7, which is nearly identical, 'This is a heraldic harness pendant of Medieval date. The heraldry has been identified by Edward Martin (SCCAS) as belonging to Edward of Caernarvon, Prince of Wales (later King Edward II), eldest son of King Edward I, who bore these arms in his father's lifetime. Edward was born 1284, Prince of Wales 1301, succeeded his father as king in 1307 and Died 1327. This was probably used by Edward and his entourage and suggests a relatively short date range of between c.1301-1307 AD.'","","2012-01-26 15:05:43","2012-01-30 16:47:55","4","","1","2011-11-02","","","","","1","1","1","1","","","","","","lwalker","Elizabeth Walker","SUSS","stephaniesmith","Stephanie Smith","Copper alloy","","","","Cast","Gilded","Complete","Good","Certain","MEDIEVAL","MEDIEVAL","","Metal detector","","Miss Stephanie Smith",""," Liz WALKER","WEST SUSSEX","LITTLEHAMPTON","ARUN","","","","TQ0202","TQ0202","TQ00SW","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","","367284","frank kurzeja 6.jpg","images/04bowmant/",
