Irish Post Medieval copper alloy 'gun money' shilling of James II (1685-1691), Dublin or Limerick mint, dated March 1689 AD, 1690 AD, Spink 6581O.
Notes:
The new year, 1690, commenced on March 25th in the contemporary reckoning so as this was issued 1-24th of March it is dated 1689. In the modern reckoning this in 1690.
These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James II was attempting to recover the English throne and were ultimately intended to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.
