<description>
<full>Part of the foot from a cast, copper alloy, Saxon brooch, probably of the cruciform type, dating from AD450&#45;650. The remaining section is rectangular, flaring slightly towards the foot. There is a raised design consisting of a central, longitudinal ridge dividing into two U&#45;shaped arms at the lower end, each U&#45;shape thus formed containing a large pellet. The upper end of this ridge is also connected to a pellet, the whole, if inverted, giving the impression of a human face. Beneath this design are three raised bands, two broad and one narrow, separated by transverse grooves. There is a further transverse groove below this, where the remainder of the foot has broken away. On the reverse of the fragment are the remains of the catch plate. Traces of gilding remain on the upper surface of the brooch. It is 26.8mm long, 16.7mm wide and 7.6mm thick. It weighs 7.54gm.</full>
