HARNESS PENDANT

Unique ID: SWYOR-E9A9A7

Object type certainty: Certain

A cast, copper alloy, medieval harness pendant dating from 1300-1450AD. The pendant is square with a recessed central circle containing a device in the form of a crown, or perhaps a castle gate or archway with three towers, the central tower being taller than the two flanking ones. The central recess is set with red enamel, most of which remains, and is surrounded by a design of pellets and circles. In the centre of the upper side is a flat suspension arm with a collar, pierced for connection to the upper part of the fitting. A short section of the pendant suspension mount and the copper alloy connecting pin remain in place. The pendant has a dark brown patina. It is 25.6mm long, 14.3mm wide and 6mm thick. It weighs 3.34gm.

Similar pendants are illustrated in the London Museum Medieval Catalogue, Lancaster House, 1940, pages 118-122. Compare also LIN-3879A6, NMS-926ED2 and NARC-91C233 which are matching examples.
