CLOTH SEAL</objecttype>
<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A folded lead cloth seal or souvenir dating to the 17th century. The seal was originally circular but both sides have been bent backwards and the badge is now sub&#45;rectangular in plan. The front is decorated with a moulded motif of an angel standing left holding a palm branch in the right hand; the left hand is illegible. Around the perimeter is an inscription reading GLORIA IN EXCELSIS [ ]. The other side is illegible apart from a thin line.
The seal is similar to another from London (Egan, Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items in the British Museum (London: British Museum Occasional Paper 93, 1995), p.43, no.69, fig.21). These objects bear the same devices as other 17th century London cloth seals but are thought to have been used as souvenirs or mementos (ibid, p.43).</full>
