{"recordID":"483655","finds":[{"created2":"2012 01 24","description":"<p>A cast, copper alloy, medieval harness pendant set dating from 1300-1450AD. It is in two parts, the upper portion which was attached to the harness and the pendant itself. These were joined by a pin, but this is missing and the two sections have become separated. The pendant suspension mount consists of a cross, of triangular section, with one arm shorter than the other three. The three equal length arms each end in a rounded knop and each is pierced with a circular hole for attachment to the harness. The shorter arm is divided by a U-shaped slot, the ends of which have been pierced to take a short copper alloy pin forming the hinge with the pendant. One of the piercings retains traces of this pin; the remainder of the pin is missing. The pendant itself is circular with a flared knop at each corner; these knops are decorated with four short radial ridges separated by three shallow grooves. In the centre is what appears to be a oval human or animal face. The face is in relief and gilded. The ground has possible traces of red enamel. A flat suspension arm, pierced for connection to the upper part of the fitting, projects from the top of the pendant. The whole pendant retains traces of gilding. It is 47.9mm long, 33.1mm wide and 5.7mm thick. It weighs 7.63gm.<\/p>\n<p>Similar pendants are illustrated in the London Museum <em>Medieval Catalogue<\/em>, Lancaster House, 1940, pages 118-122.
