<descriptions>
<description>
<full>A Middle Bronze Age unlooped copper&#45;alloy palstave.
The artefact is of slender form and is parallel&#45;sided at the top, gradually widening towards the blade. On either side of the palstave the flanges and stop ridge stand proud of the septum. Immediately below the stop ridge is a shield&#45;shaped depression. The blade is crescentic, its thickness declining towards the cutting edge. A vertical casting flash, visible on the two narrower faces, has been trimmed and hammered flat. There are also numerous hammer marks on the blade. The artefact has a dark green patina and is corroded in places. It measures 150.8mm long, up to 34.3mm wide (blade) and a maximum of 18.9mm thick (stop ridge). The weight is 208.34g.
Similar palstaves are illustrated by Schmidt and Burgess (1981: cf. nos. 773 and esp. 778), who label them &#39;Primary shield pattern palstaves&#39;. Such artefacts date from c. 1450 to c. 1250 BC.</full>
