SEAL MATRIX
Unique ID: NCL-974151
Object type certainty: Certain
A cast copper-alloy seal matrix of Medieval date, c. 1200-1400.
The seal matrix is conical with six facets arcing to a collar below the (now missing) suspension loop. The flat base bears the design of a paschal lamb standing right, with is head looking left over its shoulder (reguardant). On the lamb's back is a staff surmounted by a cross and with a pennant flag with two tails waving to the left at its top. The flag bears a cross, but tilted in the form of a saltire, in a square panel distinct from the swallow tails of the pennant.
The inscription reads: ECCE ACRVSDE
There may be a mistake or transcription error in the seal matrix, which should probably read ECCE[S] CRVSADE, perhaps refering to one of the Crusades of the [Catholic] Church.
This is a find of note and has been designated: Include in MedArch
Inscription: ECCE ACRVSDE
