PURSE

Unique ID: NCL-94B0F7

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete, cast copper-alloy purse bar of late Medieval date, c. 1400-1500.

The bar has a cubical central boss decorated on one face with a cross and on the other face with a monogram or heraldic symbol, though corrosion and wear obscures the details. A vertical perforation through the boss retains the swivel/suspension loop cast integral with its pin, which was fixed in place on the lower side of the boss with a conical washer or lug that appears to have been soldered in place. The underside of the boss appears countersunk to accomodate the washer/lug of the suspension loop and bar. The suspension loop itself is drop-shaped in profile, with the narrow end connecting to the bar. To either side of the boss is a zoomorphic collar, with the beast's maw opening around the arms/bars. One arm is broken approximately 15mm from the collar, but the other arm remains mostly intact, missing its knobbed terminal. The underside also bears the bases of sowing holes, which were probably perforating two plates or extensions rather than one, based on the space of the remains. The bar is hexagonal in section.
