There is a horizontal moulding on the end, followed by a slightly tapering D-sectioned shaft which has further horizontal mouldings enclosing a circular conical recess (which may once have held a stone), before extending to a rounded element which then terminates in a finely cast animal's neck and head. Ears, eyes, nose, mouth and coat-patterning are all well-defined. A hinged rivet is secured through the round element and would have secured the clasp to the book. The hinge on the upper surface is broken. The reverse is flat. Heavily gilded; much of which survives.
