FINGER RING

Unique ID: LON-32C750

Object type certainty: Certain

A post medieval gold memento mori ring dating to 1726 AD. It has a central grey-purple stone or piece of cut glass in the shape of a coffin within a gold coffin-shaped setting, surrounded by an engraved skeleton on the gold band. In the internal face of the ring is the inscription "W ALLBURY OB 18' FEB 1726 CET 74" (W Allbury died 18th February 1726 aged 74) followed by the stamped maker's mark "CB". It measures 21.9mm (external diameter including stone; 20.2mm diameter without) x 17.8mm (internal diameter) x 2.7mm (thickness including stone; 1.4mm without) and weighs 3.14g.

Notes:

As this ring was less than 300 years old when discovered it does not fall under the Treasure Act (1996); however because it is a dated example with maker's mark it has been recorded to help identify future finger rings.
