A nineteenth century lead Russian bale seal of St. Petersburg. The seal is a circular disc with a hole running between the two faces for the cord or string. Lettering is visible on both sides. The letters are very worn in places. Side A reads: ?SP[B]/[?}HRH/{?N]1803. Side B reads: ?NA/?rЛЛ?N/??A/?H14.
The letters SPB stand for St. Petersburg. The seal indicates that the goods have been checked for quality and/or taxed. Such seals were attached to flax and hemp seed bags and finished linen.
