STIRRUP
Unique ID: SUR-7B6831
Object type certainty: Certain
A large late Saxon (Anglo-Scandinavian) stirrup-strap mount belonging to Williams Class A Type 1. The height of the mount, including the bent flange is 75.03mm. The flange is angled slightly downwards and there is a prominent tear just above it which has caused the upper part of the mount to twist to one side. This damage was probably caused during use. The design, which is characteristic of mounts of Type 1, shows two linear beasts in profile with curling crests. Between the beasts is a pair of opposed spirals and an upright lobe. Below the apex loop is a pair of parallel lines (a fillet). Passing through the flange is a pair of iron rivets.
