TOKEN

Unique ID: SUSS-139443

Object type certainty: Certain

An incomplete uniface Post Medieval cast lead token. The token is sub-circular in plan with about 10% missing from a straight cut that has occurred across one edge of the flan. One side has a raised design that probably depicts a house with a chimney. The reverse is flat and undecorated. Lead tokens are believed to have fulfilled a variety of functions throughout history. The earliest types are thought to have served an ecclesiastical purpose, but they are also known to have been used extensively to provide small change in the community and act as checks and tallies for services provided. Lead and its alloys are very easy to work and locally produced tokens were fashioned into a myriad of different designs many of which had considerable longevity. This token would date from around 1500-1800 AD. Powell type 23.
