An incomplete Medieval rotary key dating from about 1200-1400 AD. The key has a sub-rectangular sectioned shank with projecting pointed pin. The bit is a plain rectangle with one indent on the side closest to the pin. Wear/damage has occurred to the shank, which is bowed below the collar; the outer edge of the bit is also be broken. The bow is sub circular with central (probably off-centre) perforation; part of the bow has been broken and is missing. There is a narrow collar between the bow and the shank and the shank is wider at this end, tapering to the projected pin at the other end. The key has a dark brown patina. A key with a similar shank may be found at PAS record ID: NLM-EEDDC7. Please also see Meols, page 164, number 2071.
