BUCKLE

Unique ID: HAMP-632506

Object type certainty: Certain

A cast copper-alloy single-looped medieval buckle frame with ornate outside edge. As a buckle this is an incomplete example in so far as it is missing its pin and plate. The frame's large outer edge has knopped ends which travel slightly outwards. On the upper surface, between the knops, are three deep transverse grooves, delineating two equal ridges; the pin would have sat between these latter. The pin bar opposite is offset and, on the upper surface, narrowed. The frame is bevelled both internally and externally on the upper surface. The lower surface is broadly flat except for bevelling internally on the outer edge. The two ridges on the outer edge are 'decorated' with occasional diagonally incised lines; on one they overlap in a cross-hatching. The buckle has a dark-green patina. In London similar buckles have been found in contexts dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Duly, a wide date range is offered for this example.
